What exciting news is coming from New Zealand today, as the world waits for more news, a procedure is being done to give hope that this research will be a cure for diabetes.
Eight Type 1 diabetics will receive islet cells from the pancreas of a pig, in a research study that will monitor those cells to see if they will produce insulin for the transplant recipients.
The procedure is called xenotransplantation, and was performed today on the fifth volunteer.
One of the four patients ahead of him is already producing 25% of his own insulin. “All of them are showing similar sorts of trends which is quite remarkable,” says diabetes physician Doctor John Baker of the four recipients of the procedure so far.
Let’s watch for more news and pass it on so we can all monitor the progress of these pioneers in diabetes research. “Pig Cells A New Hope for Diabetes Patients”
