I have taken adipex, didurex and other weight loss supliements. I’m frustrated because I’m still not losing weight. I’m exercising most days and I just need some help. What is the best diet for me to follow that will help me control my blood sugar level and lose weight? Any ideas?

my doctor started me on Metformin and a 1600 calorie ADA diet, suggest that if you are having difficutly on your own, see your doctor and get a referral to a diabetic educator or a nutritionist. I’ve lost 25 lbs in two months since starting the metformin, and sticking to the diet like glue.

I have recently developed Diabetic Neuropathy in my feet and it keeps me up at night with the pain. I am using a prescription called “voltaren” which my doctor suggested, but it only partially works. Is there anyone who has found a better solution?

A drug called Neurontin. You gradually build up dose you take. Ask your Dr. YOU CAN NOT STOP TAKING IT WITHUT WEANING YOUR SELF OFF OF IT EITHER> ALSO- what helps me more than anything is simple foot stretching excercises when I lay down and before I get up, Takes 1 minute. Just flex your toes upward 10 times. Sounds totally weird, but I do not have to take anymore meds for diabetic neuropathy. I am doing excellent.

Although there is a book that states that a person’s blood type should dictate their diet – and although this book has made quite a bit of money – it is absolute nonsense. A person’s blood type has nothing to do with the type of diet that they should consume whether they are a diabetic diet or not. The best diet for a diabetic has been muddled quite a bit by of all people the American Diabetes Association. They have changed their recommended diet many times over my 30 years in medicine because there is no ‘special’ diet that a diabetic requires. A diabetic should eat the same diet that would be recommended for virtually anyone – and it is a diet that in urban areas is rarely followed. The diet would be one rich in fresh fruits in vegetables, minimizing processed foods, salt, fats, cholesterol, and sugar (glucose). The latter is a bit complicated as ‘sugar’ is a vague term comprising a varied group of carbohydrates all of which have a different ‘glycemic index’. The higher the glycemic index the more likely that the carbohydrate in the food will end up as glucose as opposed to another substance. Depending upon where in Africa this person is living they may find that the diet is one of fresh fruits and vegetables with a minimal amount of processed food. Salt is easily avoided and fats and high cholesterol food is less common in Africa than in the United States. So far as glycemic index is concerned I do not know that I would worry much about this as from your question I gather that your friend is living in Africa temporarily. If they are planning on living in Africa long-term then I would suggest that they type ‘glycemic index’ into a search engine on the internet for advice. On of the most important issues for a diabetic is to maintain a ‘lean’ body weight. A person’s body mass index should be less than 25 kg/M2 if they are 25 years old or older. If you type ‘body mass index’ into a search engine you will find many sites that will calculate your body mass index for you if you input your height and weight. The 25 kg/M2 referenced above may not apply for those less than age 25 – the goal for body mass index is more difficult to establish for these individuals. Diabetes runs very strong in my family. My grandmother had her leg amputated because of it and now my mother has it. Is there a good strict diet or eating plan out there so that I can lower my chances of getting it? Ive already started monitoring my blood sugar on a daily basis. Im only 21 and so its better to start young. I want a long, happy and healthy life.

You are very wise for your age. You are correct in being cautious.

You diet should be the same as the healthy diet for anyone. The way to loose weight is to use more calories then you eat. A dietitian can give you a good ideas about how many calories should consume in a day.

Red meat no more than twice a week. Eat fish at least two to three times a week. Lots of fruit mad vegetables. Avoid trains fats. Eat whole grains and no white bread. Fiber is very good. Eat about the same number of calories in each of your three meals. Do not skip meals and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.

In addition you should exercise for at least 30 minutes a day five or more times a week.

You should see a doctor especially one that specializes in diabetes. An endocrinologist is best.
Tell the doctor your concerns and the reasons for it.

Doing things now may avert or eliminate your chances for getting diabetes and its complications. Unfortunately for you it needs to be a lifetime commitment.
