How to Manage Diabetes Effectively – Practical Tips and Methods That Work

Diabetes is a common health hazard affecting a huge bulk of the world population. It is a disease characterized by increased glucose levels in blood. The carbohydrates we consume provide our body with glucose. The hormone insulin is secreted by the beta-cells of our pancreas in response to the amount of glucose in blood. Insulin burns down glucose, makes it enter the body cells. This is a metabolic process that supplies the body with energy.

A diabetes patient can escape complications of the disease by adopting healthy life-style, diet and physical activity. But if the disease is taken lightly, it may be quite hazardous and even life threatening. Diabetes if goes unnoticed and untreated for a prolonged period can cause serious cardiovascular disorders. Dearth of insulin causes cholesterol to float in blood and clog arterial passage ways leading to heart attack. This is the reason for 80% of deaths due to diabetes. Renal failure, retinal damage, and neuropathy also occur due to diabetes. However effective management of the disease can make the patient less prone to serious complications. Some ways to manage diabetes effectively are given below.

1. Treatment and medications – Insulin injections are usually recommended for Type 1 diabetes. For Type 2 diabetes, oral medications are prescribed by doctors. The common medicines prescribed include avandamet oral, amaryl oral, actos-oral, lantus SubQ, byetta SubQ, cozaar oral etc.

2. Herbs – Diabetes can be treated with the help of some very beneficial herbs. Cinnamon, bitter melon, kino, slyvestre, onion, garlic, fenugreek, blueberry, Asian ginseng, gingko biloba, banaba etc are useful herbs for diabetes. Many herbal supplements are composed of these herbs.

3. Exercise – Exercise is a very effective; rather foundational diabetes management technique. Flexibility or stretching exercises are needed. They improve joint flexibility, range of motion, and balance. Aerobic exercises like walking, jogging, cycling, biking and skiing are quite essential for diabetics. Such exercises effectively burn down calories, help one to shed pounds of flab and thus allow metabolism to run properly.

4. A diabetic should take moderate amount of carbohydrates, at the same time keeping in mind the nutritional value of food. Generous eating of highly processed, flavored food is to be avoided, for they supply the body with hoards of carbohydrates and an increased amount of insulin production takes place in response to that, slowly making the body cells non-reactive to insulin by turning off the insulin receptors.

Hope this article will help you know some of the effective and practical tips and methods to control your blood sugar levels.

How To Manage Diabetes Effectively 101

Before the discovery of insulin in 1921, everyone with type 1 diabetes died within a few years after diagnosis. Although insulin is not considered a cure, its discovery was the first major breakthrough in diabetes treatment.

Today, healthy eating, physical activity, and taking insulin are the basic therapies for type 1 diabetes. The amount of insulin must be balanced with food intake and daily activities. Blood glucose levels must be closely monitored through frequent blood glucose checking. People with diabetes also monitor blood glucose levels several times a year with a laboratory test called the A1C. Results of the A1C test reflect average blood glucose over a 2- to 3-month period.

Healthy eating, physical activity, and blood glucose testing are the basic management tools for type 2 diabetes. In addition, many people with type 2 diabetes require oral medication, insulin, or both to control their blood glucose levels.

Adults with diabetes are at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In fact, at least 65 percent of those with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke. Managing diabetes is more than keeping blood glucose levels under control–it is also important to manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels through healthy eating, physical activity, and use of medications (if needed). By doing so, those with diabetes can lower their risk. Aspirin therapy, if recommended by the health care team, and smoking cessation can also help lower risk.

People with diabetes must take responsibility for their day-to-day care. Much of the daily care involves keeping blood glucose levels from going too low or too high. When blood glucose levels drop too low–a condition known as hypoglycemia–a person can become nervous, shaky, and confused. Judgment can be impaired, and if blood glucose falls too low, fainting can occur.

A person can also become ill if blood glucose levels rise too high, a condition known as hyperglycemia.

People with diabetes should see a health care provider who will help them learn to manage their diabetes and who will monitor their diabetes control. Most people with diabetes get care from primary care physicians–internists, family practice doctors, or pediatricians. Often, having a team of providers can improve diabetes care. A team can include:

- a primary care provider such as an internist, a family practice doctor, or a pediatrician

- an endocrinologist (a specialist in diabetes care)

- a dietitian, a nurse, and other health care providers who are certified diabetes educators–experts in providing information about managing diabetes

- a podiatrist (for foot care)

- an ophthalmologist or an optometrist (for eye care)

and other health care providers, such as cardiologists and other specialists. In addition, the team for a pregnant woman with type 1, type 2, or gestational diabetes should include an obstetrician who specializes in caring for women with diabetes. The team can also include a pediatrician or a neonatologist with experience taking care of babies born to women with diabetes.

The goal of diabetes management is to keep levels of blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol as close to the normal range as safely possible. A major study, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), showed that keeping blood glucose levels close to normal reduces the risk of developing major complications of type 1 diabetes.

This 10-year study, completed in 1993, included 1,441 people with type 1 diabetes. The study compared the effect of two treatment approaches–intensive management and standard management–on the development and progression of eye, kidney, nerve, and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. Intensive treatment aimed to keep A1C levels as close to normal (6 percent) as possible. Researchers found that study participants who maintained lower levels of blood glucose through intensive management had significantly lower rates of these complications. More recently, a follow-up study of DCCT participants showed that the ability of intensive control to lower the complications of diabetes has persisted more than 10 years after the trial ended.

The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, a European study completed in 1998, showed that intensive control of blood glucose and blood pressure reduced the risk of blindness, kidney disease, stroke, and heart attack in people with type 2 diabetes.

Living with Diabetes is not easy because there are so many factors that have to be taken into consideration concerning your lifestyle. There are two types of diabetes simply labeled type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is normally diagnosed in children and young adults, while type 2 diabetes may develop over the years and strike when you are older. Diabetics suffering from type 1 diabetes will have to take regular insulin injections because their bodies are unable to produce the necessary insulin; while people suffering from type 2 can be treated with dietary modifications and anti diabetic tablets. In some cases insulin making cells in type 2 diabetes sufferers fail and as a result sufferers will also require starting of taking insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes suffered by millions all over the world.

Who has the most risk of contracting diabetes?

People that can contract diabetes more than others are old age people, the obese and very overweight, those with a family history of diabetes, sedentary people; and recently research has shown Asians and black skinned people have twice the risk of developing type 2 diabetes due to lifestyle factors. Unfortunately symptoms of type 2 diabetes develop gradually and can be unnoticeable until long after the onset of the disease. People with high glucose levels in their blood may even experience no symptoms at all.

If you suffer symptoms of fatigue, excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss or weight gain; wounds that are slow to heal, very dry skin, vision change, or tingling and numbness in your body, then it is vital to consult with your doctor because you may be suffering from diabetes. This disease can damage blood vessels, your kidneys, and heart arteries, and other complications in the body may arise; the result is that your life can be shortened by up to 10 years if you do not get proper treatment. Type 2 diabetes can also cause loss of healthy vision, impotence in men and even nerve damage. With all these scary factors it is certainly a sensible decision to get tested by a healthcare professional if you are suspicious of any changes in your body.

Treatments for Diabetes

Treating diabetes means keeping the level of sugars or glucose levels in your blood as normal as possible. Too high; a level of glucose in the bloods is known as hyperglycemia, and too low hypoglycemia. Keeping sugar levels normal can be done by eating correctly, regular exercise and taking medicines and insulin’s as your doctor has prescribed. People suffering from diabetes must get into a habit of checking blood glucose levels regularly. These checks can give you an indication of how certain foods, exercise and medicines are reacting in your body and helping control your type 2 diabetes. New technology equipment that is compact to carry with you has been designed for the purpose of doing these checks without any discomfort. Doctors’ visits will also give you an indication of how well your blood sugar is controlled over periods of time.

Diabetics need to be lifestyle conscious.

If you live properly taking care of what foods you eat, then it is relatively simple living a healthy balanced lifestyle. Some tips of controlling diabetes include:

A carefully balanced diet knowing which foods need to be avoided.

Your doctor will give you guidance on this suitable for your type of diabetes.

If you are obese or overweight then it is vital to shed those pounds as quickly as possible because dangers to your health increase exponentially.

Regular exercise helps controlling blood sugar while you are burning sugar for energy.

Diabetes sufferers that are sedentary may suffer heart attacks. If you have been sedentary for a long period take care to ask your doctor before taking on any exercise routines.

Taking prescribed medication.

If you need insulin injections, then you will need to learn the care for storage and injecting yourself from your health care provider or diabetes center.

Do as much research on the condition of diabetes how to care for yourself if you are a sufferer and what new medications are available on the market.

Before the discovery of insulin in 1921, all people with type 1 diabetes died within a few years after diagnosis. Although insulin is not considered a cure, it was the first major breakthrough in diabetes treatment. Today, healthy eating, physical activity, and treatment with insulin are the main treatments for type 1 diabetes. The amount of insulin must be balanced with food intake and daily activities.

Blood sugar levels must be monitored closely with frequent blood glucose monitoring. People with diabetes also monitor blood glucose levels several times a year with a laboratory test called the A1C. Results of the A1C test reflects average blood sugar levels over a 2 – to 3-month period.

Healthy diet, physical activity, and blood glucose test the basic management tools for type 2 diabetes. In addition, many people with type 2 diabetes require oral medication, insulin, or both, to control their blood sugar.

Adults with diabetes are at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In fact, die at least 65 percent of people with diabetes to heart disease or stroke. Managing diabetes is more than keeping blood sugar under control – it is also important to manage blood pressure and cholesterol levels through healthy eating, physical activity, and the use of medication (if needed). In this way, people with diabetes can reduce the risk. Aspirin therapy if recommended by the health care team, and smoking cessation can also help lower risk.

People with diabetes need to accept responsibility for the day-to-day care. A large part of daily care involves managing the blood glucose levels so that they do not go too low or too high. When blood sugar drops too low – a condition known as hypoglycemia – a person can get nervous, insecure and confused. A person may be ill if blood glucose levels rise too high, a condition known as hyperglycemia.

People with diabetes must have a doctor who will help them learn all about keeping their diabetes under control, and who will monitor the diabetes control. Most people with diabetes receive care by primary care physicians – internists, family physicians or pediatricians. However it can often be managed with a team of providers to improve diabetes care. A team can include: – a primary care provider, such as an internist, a family practice physician or pediatrician, an endocrinologist (a specialist in Diabetes Care) – a nutritionist, nurse or other health care providers, who are certified diabetes educators – experts in providing information about managing diabetes. The team also can include a podiatrist (for foot care) – an optometrist or optician (for eye care) and other health professionals, such as cardiologists and other specialists.

In addition, the team for a pregnant woman with Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes should include an obstetrician who specializes in the care of women with diabetes. The team can also be a pediatrician or a neonatologist with experience will take care of children born with diabetes.

The goal of diabetes management is to keep blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol as close to the normal range as safely possible. A large study showed, the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), that reduces the maintenance of blood glucose close to normal, the risk of developing major complications of Type 1 diabetes.

The 10-year study completed in 1993, included 1441 people with type 1 diabetes. The study compared the effect of two treatment approaches – intensive management and standard management – on the development and progression of the eyes, kidneys, nervous system and cardiovascular complications of diabetes. Intensive treatment aimed to HbA 1c as close to normal (6 percent) believe as possible. The researchers found that study participants managed to lower blood glucose through intensive management had significantly lower rates of complications. Recently, a follow-up study of DCCT participants showed that the intense scrutiny from the complications of diabetes, kept the complications lower for more than 10 years after the process had finished.

The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, a European study in 1998 has been completed, and showed that intensive control of blood sugar and reduced blood pressure the risk of blindness, kidney disease, stroke and myocardial infarction in patients with type 2 diabetes. I am sure that you will see that control of blood sugar and blood pressure is very helpful to stay healthy.
