I thought that being a diabetic (whether type I or II) meant being hyperglycemic because of a lack or misuse of insulin. If he is already hyperglycemic wouldn’t eating a candy bar make things worse. Unless, there is such thing as being hypoglycemic with diabetes.

There is a problem with hypo glycemic in all diagnosed diabetics. There is the problem that we have to eat something about every 3 hours!! If our glucose levels dip below 50, we can be hauled to the ER!!

a lot of us try hard to maintain a normal level of 100! If we don’t eat on schedule especially if we are taking insulin injections, we do indeed go low!!!

Your friend is not an “alleged” diabetic!! Your friend is a diabetic!!! And we are allowed some special perks that the rest of you are not, because of our diseases.

You do not want to HAVE to eat a candy bar in class when no one else may do so!!! The hypers are no picnic, believe me!!!

Question by joesbaby: Where can I find information on high blood pressure and Diabetic diet?
My boyfriend recently had a 2nd heart attack and now has to have a quadruple bypass in a month…….where can I find information a what he can eat? He was diagnosed with diabetes, and has always had high blood pressure..but he is very stubborn and won’t eat right…I think this time scared him…PLEASE HELP..ANY INFORMATION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

No, a diabetic should control his calorie intake as well. It’s becoming more and more clear that type II diabetes is not just a disease of glucose levels, but also of fat handling. Being obese is known to be a risk factor for type II diabetes.

Question by Veruca Salt: What are some diet plans for a diabetic with high cholesterol?
I am an uninsured diabetic who just found out that I have high cholesterol as well. Because I have no insurance I see a sliding scale doctor. They pretty much diagnose me, prescribe medication and offer me little to no advice as to what to eat. Can someone offer me some advice on a diet that may work to lower my cholesterol as well as keep my sugar where it needs to be?

what I was taught in medical school was to use 1-3 gms/day Niacin ( not the no flush kind) taken before bed. for cholesterol

stay away from processed foods (frozen dinners)
try not to eat bread and cookies but if you have the urge eat potato bread and sugar free cookies
don’t eat rice, candy,pretzels, yogurt, cookies,jelly, juice and sugared sodas, milk . if you eat these things eat them with meat and exercise immediately after (long walk 20mins)
start eating lots of chicken and fish cut down on eggs

Question by Me: With your gestational diabetes when did high blood pressure start?
I am 31 1/2 weeks pregnant and failed my 3 hour glucose test. I am controlling my blood sugar with diet, but was wondering when high blood pressure usually starts with gestational diabetes? I had high blood pressure at the end of my last pregnancy and was induced at 37 weeks. I didn’t have gestational diabetes last time though.

Weird…I was also induced during my 1st pregnancy at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia (no GD that time) and had GD with my second pregnancy. My bp never got that high during my 2nd pregnancy, though it did slowly and steadily rise at the end.

absolutely. my father was diagnosed as a diabetic in the 80′s and my wife in the last year thought the atkins(glycemic index?) diet would be revolutionary. no they are the same thing. the less refined the carbs the better it is for your body and harder it is for your body to get at the energy stored in the food. plus you get the fiber.

Remember life is about variety just try to make lots of good choices with the occasional bad one. my father still covets his small piece of chocolate cake. It’s hilarious to watch how long it can last. however he knows he can not have two or even another the next day…………….
