If You Have Diabetes Know When to Seek Medical Care

If you or anyone you know are experiencing symptoms of diabetes it is important to seek medical care. This is true even if the person is not known to be diabetic. When making the appointment tell them that you are concerned with diabetes. This way your healthcare provider may make arrangements for blood sugar testing before your visit. It is estimated that over 40 million people have diabetes and do not know it.

If the person is known to be diabetic call your healthcare provider immediately if any of the following apply to their situation.

If the patient’s blood sugar levels are not being controlled with normal treatment or their blood sugar levels remain above 200mg/dL consistently. Blood sugar levels remaining high persistently is the main factor in triggering complications.

You must also be concerned if blood sugar levels fall below 60 mg/dL. This can be a sign of infection, kidney failure, liver failure or adrenal gland failure. It can also be an indication that the treatment plan that is being followed is too aggressive. In either case your doctor needs to be aware.

When a person has any injury to their feet or legs, no matter how small. Even a small or minor cut can be serious for a person with diabetes. Receiving treatment for any problems with the person’s lower extremities is very important. This is why many people with this disease receive regular diabetic foot care. It is critical in preserving function of the legs and avoiding amputation.

Infections can be much more serious for people with diabetes than other people. A low grade fever, usually below 101.5 F, can be a sign of infection. Make special note of any conditions such as painful urination, chest pain, redness or swelling on the skin or abdominal pain. This will help your doctor to pinpoint the source of the infection.

If the patient can keep liquids down but has nausea or vomiting you need to let your doctor know immediately. He or she may want to adjust the medications while the patient is still sick and recommend an urgent office visit or a visit to the emergency room. Persistent nausea or vomiting can be a sign of ketoacidosis, which can be a life threatening condition.

If the patient has a non healing sore or ulcer on their feet or legs you should see your doctor. These types of sores can be easily evaluated with an office visit provided the patient does not have a fever and their blood sugar levels are under control.

When contacting the healthcare provider let them know that you are concerned about someone with diabetes. They will probably have you speak to a nurse who can ask questions a recommend a further course of action. Be prepared to have this conversation. Have a list of medications being taken, medical problems, allergies to any medicines and a blood sugar diary handy. This will help them determine the urgency of the situation and proceed with the best plan of action.

EMERGENCY CARE

There may be times that an emergency 911 call is in order. The following are some of the diabetic emergencies that would necessitate such a call.

If a person is showing signs of an altered mental state such as forgetfulness, agitation or just behavior that is not normal for them this may be a sign of low blood sugar. In a situation like this try giving them fruit juice or cake icing, avoid hard candies that could cause choking. If the person does not come back to their normal mental state within 15 minutes call 911 immediately.

If the person can not keep food, water or medication down this may be a sign of ketoacidosis or other complications. If the person has not taken their latest medications do not administer them without taking to a medical professional. If the person already has low blood sugar taking medication may push them to dangerously low levels.

If the person has a temperature of 101.5 F or higher. In this case if your primary care provider can not see them right away seek emergency care. Make note of any symptoms such as abdominal or chest pain.

If the patients has a blood sugar level of 400 mg/dL or higher this can be a sign of serious complications. When their primary care physician can not see them right away call 911. These complications can lead to death.

Other conditions that may require immediate medical care would be large wounds greater than 1 inch in diameter that are not healing properly, chest pain or severe abdominal pain.

If a person has to go to the emergency room make sure someone who can speak for them is present to give emergency personnel the information they need to treat them quickly and effectively.

Question by Nichole: Does anyone know where I can find a diabetic diet plan like the doctor gives patients?
I know a lady who had to go on a diabetic diet for health reasons. I was wondering if there was anywhere that I could find a meal plan for a 1800 calorie or 1600 calorie diet, that lists foods for each meal and snacks etc etc. I know for a dieabetic diet just cut out sugar, but the meal plans actually break it down. Please help.

Best answer:

Answer by onlymatch4u
You really don’t want a diet plan given to someone by a doctor. They have no knowledge of nutrition and the person that gave the doctor the plan was probably a rep from a drug company that was promoting some diabetic drug.

A very good site to learn about diabetes diets and how to manage the blood sugar can be found at: www.mendosa.com

That web site is very comprehensive and very good information that is nutritionally sound. You need to understand the difference between glycemic index and glycemic load. The index is not the best way to approach the issue because it requires 50 grams of a nutrient and just imagine how many carrots are in 50 grams. The Glycemic Load deals with “SERVING SIZES” and is much better. To count calories is not a good idea either. The type of food you eat that provides calories is the important issue.

And yes, it IS possible to cut out sugar, but carbohydrates generate glucose in the blood the same as sugar. The difference is the density of the carb and how long it takes the body to break it down. If you overload your body with carbs or sugar, this is when you get the “insulin resistance” associated with diabetes. It’s not enough just to manage your diet, but you need to look at many other aspects, such as digestion. If you are not digesting properly, and have a high pH in the stomach, you will get the nano bacteria that CAUSES DIABETES because it will attack the pancreas. I strongly urge you to seek out a Certified Nutritional Therapist to guide you through this process. Diabetes type II is NOT a life sentence and you CAN get healthy again with the proper advice.

good luck to you

Answer by Kitsune
ones that use equal or splenda would be good. Or ones that do not use very much sugar or use no sugar. It must be complex sugars and complex carbohydrates.

If your pet has just been diagnosed with canine diabetes, you’re probably feeling shocked and overwhelmed right now. But don’t despair. Managing diabetes in dogs can be challenging at first, but after a few months, you and your pet will be old hands at it. Here are some answers to questions you probably have.

1. Why Are Blood Sugar Levels Important?

Your pet’s body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose during the digestion process. Glucose is what fuels the body. It’s transported by the blood to all parts of your pet’s body.

Blood glucose levels go up after a meal. That’s when insulin, produced in the pancreas, is released into your pet’s system to keep the blood sugar levels from becoming too high.

If not enough insulin is being produced, blood sugar levels will get too high, which causes damage over time to your pet’s organ systems. If your pet isn’t fed at the right time, or he receives too much insulin, blood sugar levels can plummet to dangerously low levels, which can quickly cause death.

Blood sugar is measured by how many mg of glucose are present in a deciliter of blood. Normal blood sugar levels in dogs range between 75 and 120 millegrams per deciliter (mg/dL). It’s normal for the blood sugar levels to rise after a meal. But if they stay above 180 for a long time, the body will try to get rid of excess sugar by excreting it in the urine. This is known as “sugar spilling.”

Blood sugar levels below 80 are too low, and if the level drops below 60, this is a crisis situation. You need to get your pet’s blood sugar levels higher right away.

2. What Does “Regulation” Mean For Diabetes In Dogs?

Your pet is considered “regulated” when the supplies of food and insulin are balanced, which results in blood sugar levels staying within normal levels all day.

If your pet is left alone all day, it can be challenge to keep her blood sugar levels from gettng too low or too high. You don’t want her blood sugar levels to get too low, because this can be fatal quickly. If levels are too high for long periods of time, ketoacidosis can result, which is a different crisis. Until she’s well-regulated, you may need to have someone come home mid-day to check her blood sugar level.

3. Regulating Canine Diabetes Takes Time

You’ll need to establish a routine of feeding your pet at the same time every day. Two meals a day, twelve hours apart, is usually recommended. You’ll also need to check her blood sugar levels and give her an insulin injection twice a day, usually at mealtimes.

It’s best to give her the insulin shot after she eats. If you give it to her before you feed her, and then she doesn’t eat, her blood sugar levels will drop dangerously low, which means an emergency trip to the vet.

Always warm insulin in your hand before you give it to your dog, as injecting it while it’s cold is painful for your pet.

Is There A Cure For Diabetes In Dogs?

Unfortunately, no. The best cure is prevention. Since the biggest risk factor for dogs with diabetes is being overweight, putting her on a diet is the best thing you can do for your pet. Plenty of exercise is essential, too. Exercise is a great way to control blood sugar levels naturally.

Natural remedies for dogs contain herbs and dietary supplements which have been proven to control blood sugar levels naturally. Many pet owners have successfully used a combination of diet, exercise, and herbs to prevent diabetes in dogs.

Don’t wait for your pet to develop canine diabetes. While it’s still fresh in your mind, you’ll want to start learning now how you can prevent your pet from becoming a diabetic.
