I’m 33 weeks pregnant and was recently diagnosed with a touch of gestational diabetes. I am no longer allowed to have more than 15g of carbs for breakfast before 10:00 am. So I have been reduced to some fruit and a glass of milk or yogurt for breakfast. Prior, I was a milk and cereal, muffins, oatmeal, eggs, bacon, and toast eater for breakfast. Now I am starving again after I’ve been at work for an hour with this reduced carb breakfast. It’s hard to have the energy I need to keep up at work when I haven’t had a filling breakfast. I start at 8:00 and I don’t get my lunchbreak until 1:00 usually. I can bring a snack to tie me over until lunch, but I still can’t even eat that until after 10. So do you have any good ideas of foods that will fill me up better but still be within the 15g of carbs guideline?

Eggs and bacon don’t have any carbs so you can still do those. I ate a lot of string cheese which also has very low carbs and is very portable. Also, if you like sausage, you can get frozen, cooked sausage and microwave it.

I found that I could eat multi-grain Cheerios and they didn’t spike my blood sugar over the acceptable limit. Are you testing 2 hours after breakfast? Because it isn’t the number of carbs you eat that is important, it’s how high your blood sugar gets afterward.

I am an uninsured diabetic who just found out that I have high cholesterol as well. Because I have no insurance I see a sliding scale doctor. They pretty much diagnose me, prescribe medication and offer me little to no advice as to what to eat. Can someone offer me some advice on a diet that may work to lower my cholesterol as well as keep my sugar where it needs to be?

what I was taught in medical school was to use 1-3 gms/day Niacin ( not the no flush kind) taken before bed. for cholesterol

stay away from processed foods (frozen dinners)
try not to eat bread and cookies but if you have the urge eat potato bread and sugar free cookies
don’t eat rice, candy,pretzels, yogurt, cookies,jelly, juice and sugared sodas, milk . if you eat these things eat them with meat and exercise immediately after (long walk 20mins)
start eating lots of chicken and fish cut down on eggs

I have recently gone to the doctor and was put on a diabetic medicine… not because I have diabetes but because I have a different condition and this medicine also helps my situation. Now because I’m on this medicine… I have to watch what I eat just as a diabetic does because this medicine messes with my insulin levels. I need some tips on good tasting food that I might be able to eat while on this medication… I am one of the pickiest eaters known to man so please keep it simple. Thanks!!!

Hey hun, I have a similar issue. Im not diabetic however I have poly cystic ovarian syndrome which acts like diabetes

I currently go to culinary school and well I find I hafta modify a lot of recipes to make them diabetic friendly.

Seeing that you’re a picky eater…if you email me a list of foods that you will eat I can probably look thorugh some of my recipes for ones that might appeal to you

Breakfast & Brunch

Maple Oatmeal

Ingredients:

water 3/4 cup
oatmeal, dry 1/2 cup
Cary’s®Sugar Free Syrup 5 Tbsp
salt 1 pinch

Preparation Instructions:

Combine all ingredients in microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high 2-1/2 to 3 minutes. Stir. Top with fruit (optional)

Morning Rush-Hour Burrito

Ingredients:

cream cheese, low-fat 1 Tbsp
6-inch flour tortilla 1 ea
strawberry jam, low sugar 1 tsp
New Zealand kiwi fruit, peeled and thinly sliced 1 ea

Preparation Instructions:

1. Spread the cream cheese over the tortilla. Spread the strawberry jam over half of the tortilla.
2. Place the kiwi slices over the other half of the tortilla. Fold the two sides together and serve.

Ritz Reduced Fat Crackers 24 ea
Kraft 2% Milk singles, cut into squares 6 ea
thin apple slices, cut into quarters 12 ea
ground cinnamon 24 pinch

1 . Top each cracker with a 2% Milk singles square, and 2 apple pieces. Sprinkle with ground cinnamon.
2 . Place on microwavable plate. Microwave on high 20 seconds or until 2% Milk singles are warm and slightly melted.

Dont eat things like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, any kinds of sweets like cookies, cakes, candies. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and meat. Eat thinks like cheese and yogurt and drink milk. Dont eat fast food or junk food or drink soda. Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day.
