I have persistent symptoms that point to diabetes, but my doctor just does a blood test and says I am fine. He doesn’t even make me fast first. This just doesn’t seem accurate to me. I would like to go to my next visit with some specific test to ask for.

A glucose tolerance test would show signs of diabetes. It is possible, even without fasting, for your doctor to believe you don’t have diabetes. If he ran a test called a Hemoglobin A1C he can tell by the numbers what’s going on with you. It’s a test which looks at 3 months worth of blood sugar levels, not just one random test. You have the right to get copies of all your test results, and maybe that might help allay some of your concerns.

What are your persistent symptoms? Thirst? Not healing from infections? Weight loss? A close family member with the condition which makes you feel concern for your own health?

A less serious Glucose Tolerance Test may show, but basically is best for you to eat and live like a diabetic from now on.
