Question by : What is the percentage that a type 1 diabetic father will pass it on to his children, son or daughter?
I am type 1 diabetic and Brett Michaels stated that if a father has type 1 diabetes, that there is a 50% chance that his children would obtain diabetes. Type 1 or type 2, what are the chances.

Best answer:

Answer by Miz Lamb
That is a total crock!! Type1 is much less genetic than most other conditions and diseases. Since in most people it is caused by disease, virus, or injury to the pancreas it is not at all genetic.

My friend is type 1, no one in her past generations ever had type 1, her children and grandchildren do not have it. She alone in her family has diabetes. My other best friend the same thing but she never had children as the doctors discouraged it when we were growing up. Come to think of it, I don’t know any men who have type 1. I had an efriend who did, but he died of some really rare complications which I cannot remember the name of right now. His daughter doesn’t have diabetes tho.

Type 2 is another story entirely. There is a 50% better chance that one’s children will eventually become type 2 diabetics. Most of the people I know who are diabetic, so was one of their parents and some of their children are tending that way, in spite of us trying to encourage them to live by a different lifestyle than that in which we raised them.

My friend and I are trying to role play a scene and her character (a detective with diabetes) just dislocated his shoulder. My character is a doctor and I wanted my response to be as medically accurate as possible. Could someone who knows more about diabetes tell me how a trauma like this might affect a person with type 1 diabetes?

Best answer:

Answer by syl c.
Any trauma to the body will affect a diabetic since infection/injury will play a role in altering your numbers. The trauma plus if you have to take antibiotics if your shoulder gets infected or if you have to take painkillers will also affect your diabetes until this injury is fixed.

Question by John W: For a type 2 diet control diabetic, how long in minutes after a meal will blood glucose level be highest?
I am a 64 yo Caucasian male. I understand ones glucose level will naturally increase after a meal. My question asks how long after a meal will glucose level spike to highest point. This may well vary in individuals, but what is considered the general, or accepted, time in minutes or hours when one would normally show highest blood glucose level via meter?
Thank you for considering my question and thank you all for any answers!

Best answer:

Answer by Kathie Emmanuelite
In general two hours, but that also depends on what you eat. If it’s high glycemic, like pure sugar, pasta, chips, juice, it could spike right away. If its a complex carb like wheat bread it won’t spike as much. It also depends on whether you eat protein with it, protein will slow down and steady the rise in blood sugars.

Question by JazyJas: What are the chances of my 2 year old daughter to develop type 1 diabetes?
Both my husband and sister in law have type 1 diabetes. My husband develop type 1 diabetes when he was 5 years old, but his identical twin did not. His younger sister developed type 1 diabetes when she was 12 years old.

Best answer:

Answer by MsRicki
No one knows for certain what causes Type 1 diabetes, but one of the theories is genetics. Since your husband has been living with it most of his life, he is aware of the signs – thirst, lessening of appetite, weight loss, frequent urination. It is entirely possible that your daughter could become a Type 1, but it’s also possible she won’t. IMO, the best thing to do is to make sure your pediatrician is aware of the family history and to keep an eye on your daughter for signs of the disease without frightening her. I have three grown children and only one is a Type I, diagnosed at 12 years. No one in either my husband’s family or mine has Type I either. There’s not much rhyme or reason to it but it might make you feel better to familiarize yourself with more detailed info at the jdf website. Good luck!

Question by Looking forward to my Rainbow: What type of gift to give to a diabetic who just came home from the hospital?
A friend of the family just came home from the hospital after suffering from pancreatitis. We are going to see him this evening, and I wanted to bring him a get well gift. I was going to bring him food, but he found out he was diabetic while in the hospital, so I’d rather not go that route. Any ideas? (He is in his 50′s)

Something under $ 15 or $ 20 would be great.

Answer by Gary B
How about a hug and an “I Love You”?

Both are free.

Diabetics need love and support more than gifts.
